Pesticide residue on produce is a problem...a big problem. Over ONE BILLION POUNDS of pesticides are used in the U.S. each year. The main purpose of a pesticide is to kill or harm living organisms. Not very nice, I know. And the harm doesn't stop with the targeted pest, there are many side effects to the human population and a few that stand out in my mind are: cancer, weakened immune system, learning problems, nervous system diseases, reproductive problems, need I go on? I don't know about you, but I think I will pass.
Most of us can not find/buy everything organic, but what we can do is avoid the produce that has the highest levels of pesticides. The Dirty Dozen is a report published each year by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) that ranks the "dirtiest" produce from a pesticide standpoint. If you can buy organic (when possible), especially the produce listed below, you will be doing your body a HUGE favor.
